"The second hitch took some 16 days and was not the easiest job ever. After I was finished with the job I had a free night to go down to Bourbon St. and see how New Orleans has faired since the Katrina disaster and let me tell you folks, it's in a bad way. They have not done much to clean that place up, and millions of dollars in aid was sent down there, where did it all go? I saw FIMA trailers in downtown, there were five shootings the night I stayed there, a year ago I stayed there and was shocked that there were 3 shootings that saturday night. For a summer night, Bourbon st. was dead, no tourism, no money being spent. It was really too bad to see that happen to such a good spot. I mean bourbon st, not New Orleans. The French quarter has been repaired but as soon as you get out of the super touristy places it looks like the flood just happened. Why is this place still torn down after a year? Where is the money?
Well enough about that, I'm glad to get out of there. I will bide my time until I go back there again, I know it will be sooner than I would like. I kept a little log while I was there, thought It would be funny to post some of it.
Why are people in the south always fixin to do stuff? Cause they're always reckon them.

As I experienced new words and phrases I kept a little journal that I turned into a dictionary of terms.
Louisiana To English / English to Louisiana Dictionary:
Not in alphabetical order. Nothing else in Louisiana is in order why should the dictionary be?
Yall (n): Contraction for "you all" but used when talking to a single person and referring to a group of people.
Example (one person to another): I'm going to the store, where yall goin?
All yall: Same as yall but talking to the whole group that is being referred to
Example: (one person to a group): Are ya workin' or are all yall gonna stand around all day?
Reckon : When a person is not sure, but believes that something will happen.
Example: I reckon we could get there in less than an hour.
Fixin' : Short for Fixing, and used to describe when someone is thinking about doing an action.
Example: I'm fixin' to take a shower tomorrow, I reckon I need one.
Shrimps : Plural for more than one shrimp. Note: in English it's one shrimp, two shrimp. But in Louisiana, it's one shrimp, two shrimps. Know the difference.
Straight: {pronounced: 'Strate} Slang for alright or OK when referring to yourself.
Example: Man one: " yall want a coke from the fridge?"
Man two " nah I'm straight?"
Yonder: Replaces "there" when referring to any location that is not within visibility.
If the item is visible, point to is and say "over there". But if you can't see the location or object, just nod your head or point in the general direction and say "Over Yonder"
Coon Ass: A term used to describe a white person who is a Cajun or a direct descendant of a Cajun. In Louisiana it's similar to a redneck or a hillbilly.
Cajun: Direct descendants of the French colonists that founded New Orleans and thus, Louisiana. Cajuns usually live in places we consider in hospitable (like below sea level) and speak a strange form of French English. See Frenglish
Frenglish: Not a real word but something that I made up to describe the language that the Cajuns speak. It sounds like slurry English with a French accent. Consonants are hard to distinguish from vowels, usually because the speaker has few, if any teeth in their mouth.
Example: Bdall bedee beday? Ok, yust oob de abada anna yix da oba dobba day.
Bayou: {Pronounced Buy-You} Similar to a river, except a river has water that runs in a direction. Upstream, or downstream are terms that can be used on a river, these terms cannot be used on a bayou because the water does not actually flow in any direction. Throw a plastic cup in a bayou and go on a lunch break, when you come back, I ..."
